Gastein - ski paradise and winter fairy tale

The Gastein valley is one of the most popular and largest ski areas in the Austrian Alps. There are numerous ski runs to be explored providing perfect conditions for beginners and experienced skiers alike, free ride pistes for the adventurous, rustic mountain restaurants offering traditional Austrian cuisine, and peaks as far as the eye can see.

Cross country skiing, which is one of the healthiest sports altogether, is getting ever more popular and in the Gastein valley you will find optimal conditions. You can choose from flat or undulating trails, the classical style or skating, floodlit for evening exercise and possible into late spring due to the long winter season in Sportgastein.

But there is so much more to enjoy in the winter in Gastein: biathlon with laser rifles, ice skating, horse riding, tobogganing, flying fox, paragliding, hang gliding, curling, …

Gastein also has a different face away from the ski pistes. You can experience the quiet side of winter on a snow shoe hike or ski tour, a romantic winter wonder walk or a sleigh ride along snowy valleys.

The highlight of your winter holiday, a very special experience and unique in this form in Gastein, will be the feeding of wild deer. There will hardly be another place in this world where you will be so close to the local game. It has taken the deer philosopher Thomas Tscherne 12 years and much patience to make the mutual approach between man and deer possible.  Hunting in the vicinity of the feeding area is prohibited. Nowadays, the animals feed quite unconcerned in his presence and they tolerate other visitors as well.
